# How the Element Air heat pump calculator prices a heat pump

Generated 6 October 2026, 11:02 am NZDT from the live calculator settings at https://elementair.co.nz/calculator/. Every price is in New Zealand dollars, includes GST, and is for the unit supplied and installed. It is an estimate: the final quote follows a free site visit, and each estimate is valid for 14 days.

To estimate a job, work through the four steps below in order. Steps 1 and 2 take the answers; steps 3 and 4 do the arithmetic.

## Step 1: the room, and the heating capacity it needs

Inputs: the room's length and width in metres, its insulation, and whether it is a living room or a bedroom. The install address is also taken here, for the travel fee and the sulphur treatment in step 4.

Example: a 5 m × 4 m partially insulated living room is 20 m², so 20 × 130 × 1.1 ÷ 1000 = 2.9 kW.

A room over 120 m² probably needs more than one system; the calculator says so but carries on.

## Step 2: the installation questions, which set the installation tier

Each system has four installed prices, tier 1 to tier 4, for increasingly involved installations. The tier starts at 1. An answer marked *tier 3* raises it to 3; *+1 tier* adds one; *+0.5 tier* adds a half (two halves make a tier, a lone half rounds away). The total is rounded down and capped at tier 4. The Wi-Fi question does not change the tier: it filters which systems are offered (Wi-Fi only, non-Wi-Fi only, or either).

## Step 3: which systems fit, and what they cost installed

A system fits when its cooling capacity plus a margin of 0.4 kW is at least the required kW from step 1. Systems come in four classes (Smart, Essentials, Designer, Black Diamond). For each class the calculator keeps one system: the smallest that fits when the visitor wants or does not want Wi-Fi, otherwise the cheapest that fits. It shows the cheapest and the most expensive of those, recommends the cheapest, and can show one per class on request.

The installed price is the system's price for the installation tier from step 2. Where a sale price is set and lower, the sale price applies (shown here as "sale price, was regular price"). Prices below are the system supplied and installed, before add-ons, the travel fee and any sulphur treatment.

An address in none of these towns gets no travel fee in the estimate; Element Air confirms it before the site visit.

### Sulphur treatment, for geothermal areas

In Rotorua the estimate includes an anti-corrosion sulphur treatment, which the visitor can remove: $700 for a unit up to 5 kW cooling capacity, $850 above that.

Rotorua’s H₂S-rich air can corrode heat pumps early, and corrosion-related failures may not be covered by warranty. Sulphur treatment helps extend your unit’s service life, but doesn’t guarantee warranty coverage.
