Spring is here, and those hot summer days aren’t far off — which means it’s time to make sure your heat pump is ready to keep you cool when it counts. Before you flick your unit over to cooling mode, there are a few quick checks and tips to make sure everything’s running smoothly, efficiently, and ready for action.
Here’s how to get your heat pump summer-ready.
1. Give the Remote a Quick Check
It sounds simple, but the first step is making sure your heat pump is actually in cooling mode. Look for the snowflake or fan icon and double-check the temperature settings. Set it somewhere between 22–25°C — any lower and you’re just using more power than needed.
2. Clean or Replace the Filters
Over winter, dust and debris build up in your filters. Dirty filters = poor airflow and a harder-working system (which means higher power bills).
Take out the filters, give them a gentle vacuum or wash (depending on your model), and make sure they’re fully dry before reinstalling. Aim to clean your filters every 1–3 months over summer.
3. Clear the Outdoor Unit
Leaves, cobwebs, or long grass can block the airflow around your outdoor unit. Make sure it’s clean, has plenty of space around it, and isn’t being smothered by anything.
A blocked outdoor unit makes the system less efficient and could even lead to overheating on those really hot days.
4. Check Airflow and Vents
Turn your system on and check the airflow — is it coming through strong and even? If not, you might have a blocked vent, dirty fan, or another issue that needs servicing.
If you’ve got a ducted system, make sure all vents are unobstructed and open in the rooms you want cooled.
5. Book a Professional Heat Pump Service
Even if everything seems to be running fine, booking in a pre-summer service with a pro is the best way to avoid mid-season breakdowns. A technician will:
- Deep clean internal components
- Check refrigerant levels
- Ensure all settings are working correctly
- Spot any wear or damage early
Servicing your system regularly keeps your Mitsubishi heat pump (or other brand) running at its best and helps extend its lifespan.
6. Use the Right Settings
Avoid constantly turning your heat pump on and off. Instead, use the timer to cool your home before you get there, or keep it running at a steady temperature.
Use Fan mode for milder days to save power, or Dry mode if humidity is high.
