Efficient home cooling!

As the temperature starts to rise, your power bill is inevitably going to get higher. Helpfully, heat pumps and air conditioners have long been lauded as the most efficient form of electric cooling, but how best to get the most out of your one?

  • Use your timer to set the unit to come on half an hour before you wake up and half an hour before you get home in the evening, leaving it off in between. It saves ‘cranking’ the air conditioner when you come home too hot in summer.
  • Set the temperature to be the optimum for your household, don’t constantly toggle/raise and lower it, this uses more energy and doesn’t actually warm up your home any faster.
  • Cleanliness of your air conditioner. Cleaning the filters regularly ensures peak efficiency

How do air conditioners work?

Air conditioning systems work by cooling warm air in order to maintain comfortable temperatures. Air is drawn into the system where it passes via an evaporator. The evaporator contains a coil, filled with coolant and refrigerant, that absorbs and transfers heat from the air and then condenses it through a compressor. This cooled air is then expelled back into the room or building, while at the same time the hot air runoff is expelled outside. Air conditioning systems regulate indoor temperature and humidity levels, making them vital components of any home or commercial space. Not only do they keep everyone cool on hot days, but they also contribute to better air quality by removing dust, pollen particles, and other allergens from the interior environment.

Which Type and Size Heat Pump is Right for Me?
Choosing the right sized heat pump is important to ensure optimum comfort levels; particularly when outdoor temperatures drop. Location, room size, and insulation levels in a room are all factors that determine which heat pump size should be installed.Insulation and building orientation are key factors which can influence the degree of heat loss in a home. An older style home with poor insulation will lose indoor heat at a faster rate than a modern well-insulated home that faces north. The quicker a home loses heat, the bigger the heat pump system will need to be to overcome this heat loss.

Outdoor ambient conditions in winter also play a big role in unit size selection. When temperatures drop, the output capacity of the heat pump also drops. Areas of New Zealand that experience sub-zero temperatures in winter will require either a larger capacity heat pump or an upgrade to a Mitsubishi Electric HyperCore® Heat Pump, in comparison to a same sized room in a warmer region. It is therefore very important that units are not undersized in low ambient conditions.

Take the guess work out – use our sizing tool to select the best heat pump for you, based on your region’s average lowest winter temperature. From here, you can book your free in-home consultation using our simple online form.

“Wow this company is awesome, I’d highly recommend them. We live in Auckland and have a holiday home in Turangi. James was so helpful and organised and installed a heat pump for us in under a week. I asked if it could be done (feeling very cheeky) prior to family going down at the weekend and he did it. So amazing to find people like this. He even went down to our house from Taupo on the Sunday to have a look at what was needed. We recently renovated our home in Auckland which has been nothing short of an absolute nightmare with trades people. James is an absolute gentleman. Thank you so much, we really appreciate how quickly you did this for us and how easy its been to communicate with you.”

Maree Eketone

All units were installed and running in one day!!, No disruption to the flow of the service. Fast, efficient with no compromise to quality work. It is wonderful to now work in luxury controlled temperature but most important our community we serve are now seen in comfort and frequently show appreciation coming into a pleasant temperature inside from the cold outside. Thank you fast, efficient, professional service who always delivers quality all-round!”

Trish Flood

“Element Air is a great company to deal with, excellent communication from the quote through to job end. James is very knowledgeable and provided the right ducted system for us that has surpassed our expectations. Highly recommend them!”

Dave Jones

“I recently had James install a heat pump in my small rental property. He has a wealth of knowledge about heat pumps, giving me a range of options and prices to choose from and also giving a recommendation as to what would work best in my property. James completed the job to a high standard and followed up the job with photos which I think is great, especially if you own a property and live out of town so can’t see the job in its completion straight away. I would highly recommend his work. Thanks again James!”

Frequently asked questions about Air con units.

Why would I want an air conditioner?

Air conditioners are more energy-efficient than other heating and cooling systems. They require less electricity and fuel to heat/cool your home. High wall mounted air conditioners also double as a heat pump.

Do I leave my air conditioner on all the time?

Air conditioners are one of the most cost-effective way to use electricity to heat your home during cooler months; however, leaving them running all day and night is not economically efficient. According to Energywise, you should switch off your heat pump when you don’t need it in order reduce energy waste.
