Efficient home heating

As the temperature starts to drop, your power bill is inevitably going to get higher. Helpfully, Mitsubishi heat pumps have long been lauded as the most efficient form of electric heating to be comfortable all year. But how best to get the most out of your one?

  • Use your timer to set the unit to come on half an hour before you wake up and half an hour before you get home in the evening, leaving it off in between. It saves ‘cranking’ the heat pump when you come home cold.
  • Set the temperature to be the optimum for your household, don’t constantly toggle/raise and lower it, this uses more energy and doesn’t actually warm up your home any faster.
  • Cleanliness of your heat pump. Cleaning the filters regularly ensures peak efficiency
  • Heat pumps all have a ‘blue star’ rating which dictates their energy efficiency, it is up to the consumer to be aware of their standing.

Single heat pumps

Single Mitsubishi Electric heat pump systems consist of one outdoor unit and one indoor unit and are designed to condition only one room. The advantages of single heat pump systems include: being economical to run as they only condition the room intended; each room having its own air conditioning unit can be set to have its own condition; heat pumps are some of the most energy-efficient units available as they are a heat exchanger making them very economical to run, and there are several types of air con units to match both your style and your pocket.

Ducted heat pumps

Ducted heat pump systems from Mitsubishi Electric are a type of central heating that circulates air through a network of ducts and vents. A ducted heat pump system is also cost-effective when doing multiple rooms at once, and it is easy to introduce fresh air replacement into the system. Element Air recommends ducted heating systems as they are controlled by sophisticated automated controllers to make them more efficient. Overall, ducted heating systems are a great option for those looking for an efficient and cost-effective way to heat their home.

Multi split heat pumps

A heat pump multi-system consists of a single outdoor unit driving a number of indoor Mitsubishi heat pumps. The advantages of such systems are that they reduce outdoor space requirements and the level of noise generated. Each room can still be set to its own temperature, though you can’t have one unit on heating while another is on cooling. You have almost the same range of indoor units available as you have for single heat pump systems, so you have the same flexibility of installation.

Floor mounted vs wall mounted heat pump?

Benefits of High wall

Floor consoles are an excellent option for homes that cannot work with a high wall (due to window and logistical constraints). They can be installed almost anywhere, and the cables and pipes can be run under the floor. This makes them an excellent replacement for open fireplaces, log burners, or fixed gas heaters. The floor console also provides easy access to clean the filter, which can be helpful for the elderly or disabled.

Benefits of Floor console or Floor mounted heat pump

  • High-wall heat pumps are capable of heating and cooling greater extremes in temperature.
  • Are sometimes more cost-effective for heating.
  • Are very quiet.
  • Thanks to their high-efficiency motors, they’re able to provide reliable cooling even in the hottest weather.
  • Because they’re mounted on the wall, they offer a much sleeker look than floor-mounted units.

Ceiling mounted heat pump

If you’re looking for a high-quality heat pump that won’t take up valuable floor or wall space, a ceiling heat pump cassette system from Mitsubishi Electric is a great option. These compact, ultra-quiet units are packed with advanced features and can be installed in the ceiling cavity to distribute both warm and cool air evenly throughout the room. Each cassette has four outlets or vents that blow the air out in all directions, so you can be sure that the distribution is even. And if you have a larger home, multiple ceiling cassette heat pumps can be hooked up to a multi-room system for even coverage. So don’t sacrifice style or comfort – choose a ceiling cassette heat pump from Mitsubishi Electric for your next home project.

Which Type and Size Heat Pump is Right for Me?
Choosing the right sized heat pump is important to ensure optimum comfort levels; particularly when outdoor temperatures drop. Location, room size, and insulation levels in a room are all factors that determine which heat pump size should be installed.Insulation and building orientation are key factors which can influence the degree of heat loss in a home. An older style home with poor insulation will lose indoor heat at a faster rate than a modern well-insulated home that faces north. The quicker a home loses heat, the bigger the heat pump system will need to be to overcome this heat loss.

Outdoor ambient conditions in winter also play a big role in unit size selection. When temperatures drop, the output capacity of the heat pump also drops. Areas of New Zealand that experience sub-zero temperatures in winter will require either a larger capacity heat pump or an upgrade to a Mitsubishi Electric HyperCore® Heat Pump, in comparison to a same sized room in a warmer region. It is therefore very important that units are not undersized in low ambient conditions.

Take the guess work out – use our sizing tool to select the best heat pump for you, based on your region’s average lowest winter temperature. From here, you can book your free in-home consultation using our simple online form.

“Wow this company is awesome, I’d highly recommend them. We live in Auckland and have a holiday home in Turangi. James was so helpful and organised and installed a heat pump for us in under a week. I asked if it could be done (feeling very cheeky) prior to family going down at the weekend and he did it. So amazing to find people like this. He even went down to our house from Taupo on the Sunday to have a look at what was needed. We recently renovated our home in Auckland which has been nothing short of an absolute nightmare with trades people. James is an absolute gentleman. Thank you so much, we really appreciate how quickly you did this for us and how easy its been to communicate with you.”

Dave Jones

“I recently had James install a heat pump in my small rental property. He has a wealth of knowledge about heat pumps, giving me a range of options and prices to choose from and also giving a recommendation as to what would work best in my property. James completed the job to a high standard and followed up the job with photos which I think is great, especially if you own a property and live out of town so can’t see the job in its completion straight away. I would highly recommend his work. Thanks again James!”

Frequently asked questions

Can I make my heat pump automatic?

Yes! Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps offer a 7 Day Controller which allows up to four settings per day. Meaning you can plan your heat pump’s operation for an entire week!

We also have an optional Wi-Fi heat Pump Control for customised control and monitoring, giving you the freedom to manage your heat pump through your smartphone, tablet or online account, no matter where you are, so long as you’re connected, you can manage your home’s atmosphere.

If I turn my heat pump up to 28°C will it heat my house faster?

A heat pump does not work like a radiant heater. Turning your heat pump up to 28°C will not make the room warm up any faster. In fact, it will instead consume more energy as it tries to achieve this unrealistic temperature.

Set your temperature to what you actually want the room to heat to, say 23°C, put it in heat mode and your heat pump will respond quickly and use less energy to get to its goal. Afterwards, your heat pump will continue to maintain the right temp without further adjusting from you.

Try using the timer function to activate the right temperature half an hour before you arrive home to return to warm, cosy comfort.

Do I need to defrost my outdoor heater in winter?

Your heater will defrost itself automatically, don’t worry if it is covered in Ice. With a Mitsubishi Electric heat pump, you get more heat and fewer defrost cycles, which means less overall power usage and a higher level of efficiency. n defrost mode the heat pump stops heating for short periods to remove ice build up from the outdoor unit

How do I know which heat pump size is best for the room I need to heat?

Because of the technical nature of choosing correct sizing, we strongly recommend that anyone in the market for a heat pump arrange an in-home consultation and quote by a member of our team here at Element Air. Every home is as individual as its owner, choosing the wrong size for the room you need to heat can leave you cold and cost you more in your power bill.

Other considerations:

  • Insulation and building orientation. For example; an older home with less insulation will lose indoor heat far quicker than a modern well insulated home. A bigger heat pump system would therefore be needed to overcome this heat loss.
  • In winter, when outdoor temperatures drops, the amount of heat a heat pump can produce lowers. Areas of New Zealand that experience sub zero temperatures will require a larger capacity heat pump (compared to a similar sized room in moderate climate) or an upgrade to a high performance heat pump like those in the Mitsubishi Electric HyperCore® Series.

Which Heat Pump is Right for Me?

Element Air recommends a free in-home consultation and quote is always best for determining the right heat pump for your home.

However, there are some considerations to be made:

  • Outdoor ambient conditions in winter. When temperatures drop, the output capacity of the heat pump also drops. Areas of New Zealand that experience sub-zero temperatures in winter (like most of the South Island) will require either a larger capacity heat pump or an upgrade to a HyperCore® Heat Pump, in comparison to a same sized room in the Auckland region. It is therefore extremely important that units are not undersized in low ambient conditions.
  • Insulation and building orientation are key factors which may influence the degree of heat loss in a home. An older style home with poor insulation will lose indoor heat much quicker than a modern well insulated home that faces north. The quicker a home loses its heat, the bigger the heat pump system will need to be to overcome this heat loss.

What is the healthy homes heating standard for rental properties?

The new healthy homes heating standard for rental properties states that there must be one or more fixed heaters that can directly heat the main living room. The main living room is described as the largest room that is used for general, everyday living – such as a lounge, family or dining room.

The Heater/s must be fixed and must be at least 1.5 KW in heating capacity and meet the minimum heating capacity needed for the main living room. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 18˚C as a minimum for an indoor temp. By installing heating that can reach this temperature on the coldest days of the year, tenants will be able to keep warm all year round.

How long do heat pumps take to install?

Usually, take around 5 to 6 hours to install a straightforward back-to-back heat pump system. More complex heat pump installations including multi-systems and air-ducted systems can take longer, call us to get a firmer estimation.

Do heat pumps need a drain?

The short answer is yes. Whether heating or cooling your home, the outdoor or indoor units will dehumidify as they operate and the resulting water needs to drain away. That’s why heat pumps are typically mounted on an outside wall.

Should I use my heat pumps 24 hours a day?

No heating appliance should be used continuously for 24/7.  Common sense tells you, that if you leave an appliance running the whole day, you can expect your power bill to rise. Use your heat pump as required. If you are not at home during the day, there is no need to run your heat pump during the day. In this situation, and with good insulation, a couple of hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening should suffice to keep you comfortable.

When running a 3.5kW heat pump for a couple of hours in the morning and four hours in the evening the estimated additional power cost is about $40.50 (including GST) per month.

How important is the heat pump installation process?

The sizing, positioning and installation of your heat pump are critical to heat your home properly. Plumbing and electrical work is a part of the process, its incredibly important that it is installed correctly, we do not recommend doing it yourself. Call us for a free quote.

Can I install a heat pump myself?

Yes and no, yes you can if you are technically capable of doing so, but if your Mitsubishi Electric Heat Pump is not installed by an authorised dealer, you will not qualify for a warranty. Element Air will also ensure the optimal position of the heat pump, educate you on the correct operation and provide a warranty for the system installed.

How much will I save on running costs if I install a heat pump?

This depends on what system of heating you currently use but even with a gas boiler, you are likely to make significant savings. For oil, LPG or direct electric heating the savings could be even greater.

What is a heat pump?

Heat pumps have been around for decades, but many people don’t realize that they’ve been using them all along. A heat pump is a device that uses the same basic technology as a refrigerator to remove heat from the air, ground, or water and move it into your home. This process is reversed in a heat pump, which extracts heat from the outside and moves it into your home. Heat pumps are extremely efficient and can take a few degrees of outside heat and upgrade it to provide all the heating and hot water you need. Mitsubishi Electric is a leading manufacturer of heat pumps, and their products are known for their quality and efficiency. If you’re looking for an efficient way to heat your home, consider a Mitsubishi Electric heat pump.

How many hours a day should you run a heat pump?

Usually, a heat pump will operate two to three times every hour. Each cycle should last 10 to 20 minutes. But when it’s cold outside, the heat pump will run continuously to keep the inside temperature steady.

Are heat pumps noisy?

Is it true that heat pumps are noisy? Are heat pumps loud? All heating equipment produces noise to some extent, but heat pumps are generally quieter than boilers driven by fossil fuels. A ground source heat pump may reach 42 decibels, and an air source heat pump can reach 40 to 60 decibels, depending on maker and installation.

Does a heat pump require ductwork?

A central heat pump uses ductwork to distribute heat and cooling throughout the home. A mini-split heat pump does not require ductwork to operate. Mini-split heat pumps, on the other hand, employ a succession of indoor heads located all over the house.

Do heat pumps use a lot of electricity?

Heat pumps need a little electricity to operate, but it’s not much. Nowadays, heat pump systems can transfer three or four times more thermal energy in the form of heat than they use in electrical energy – which the homeowner pays for.

Is a heat pump a good idea?

Heat pumps are not only the most energy-efficient heaters available but also work as central air conditioners in summer, providing you with year-round comfort.

Is a heat pump cheaper than electric heat?

While electric furnaces are considered 100% energy efficient, they can actually cost almost 2.5 times more to output the same amount of heat as a typical heat pump system. And not only does a heat pump system provide heating, but cooling as well.

Can a high wall heat pump be a bedroom heat pump?

Yes absolutely, high wall heat pumps are suitable for any room of the house

Is a heat pump also an air conditioner?

Heat pump air conditioning is also available as a dual system meaning you can choose the function depending on the weather.

What are split system heat pumps and how do they affect the cooling capacity of a building?

Split system heat pumps are a type of air conditioning system that consists of two separate units: an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. The indoor unit is typically mounted on a wall or ceiling and is responsible for blowing cool air into the room, while the outdoor unit houses the compressor and is responsible for removing heat from the room.

Split system heat pumps are popular because they are energy-efficient and can both cool and heat a room, making them a versatile option for year-round use. Additionally, split systems come in various sizes, which allows them to accommodate the cooling capacity needs of different buildings.

The cooling capacity of a split system heat pump is determined by the size and type of the system, as well as the area of the building that needs to be cooled. For example, a smaller split system heat pump may be suitable for a small room or office, while a larger split system may be necessary for cooling larger areas such as living rooms, bedrooms, or commercial spaces.

In summary, split system heat pumps are a type of air conditioning system that can cool and heat a room efficiently. The cooling capacity of the system depends on the size and type of the system, as well as the area of the building that needs to be cooled.
