The Ministry for Primary Industries New Zealand (MPI) new milk cooling standards
Element Air Taupō makes sure that farmers cooling systems are compliant with national rules that state that raw milk must be cooled to 10°C or below within four hours of the commencement of milking, and cooled to 6°C or below within the sooner of six hours from the commencement of milking or two hours from the completion of milking. Milk must also be held at or below 6°C without freezing until collection or the next milking, and must not exceed 10°C during subsequent milkings (blend temperature). These standards help to ensure that milk stays fresh and safe for consumption.

“Wow this company is awesome, I’d highly recommend them. We live in Auckland and have a holiday home in Turangi. James was so helpful and organised and installed a heat pump for us in under a week. I asked if it could be done (feeling very cheeky) prior to family going down at the weekend and he did it. So amazing to find people like this. He even went down to our house from Taupo on the Sunday to have a look at what was needed. We recently renovated our home in Auckland which has been nothing short of an absolute nightmare with trades people. James is an absolute gentleman. Thank you so much, we really appreciate how quickly you did this for us and how easy its been to communicate with you.”

“I recently had James install a heat pump in my small rental property. He has a wealth of knowledge about heat pumps, giving me a range of options and prices to choose from and also giving a recommendation as to what would work best in my property. James completed the job to a high standard and followed up the job with photos which I think is great, especially if you own a property and live out of town so can’t see the job in its completion straight away. I would highly recommend his work. Thanks again James!”

Frequently asked questions
How is milk cooled?
Each pound of milk loses 56 BTUs (27 kilojoules) during the cooling process. A refrigeration system does this by using a specific refrigerant fluid to remove heat from the milk and “reject” the heat (typically) into the outside air.
How cold is milk in a bulk tank?
Immediately cooling milk after milking not only reduces bacterial growth but also increases the shelf-life of finished products. Your bulk tank should operate to keep milk temperatures below 4 degrees Celsius while remaining above freezing. For every degree above 4, bacteria counts will rise and reduce product shelf life.
Why is it important to cool milk?
Milk must be refrigerated to inhibit bacterial growth. The milk industry standard is to cool milk to 4°C or lower within the first 3.5 hours after milking begins.
How does bulk milk cooler work?
The microprocessor-operated cooler for milk is attached to a storage tank with an agitator that keeps the milk rotating, ensuring uniform temperature throughout.
Which of the equipment is used for chilling of milk in diary?
This kind of heat exchanger, known as a plate heat exchanger, is the most common and highly successful equipment used by commercial dairies to chill milk. Several stainless steel plates are fastened to a solid stainless steel structure in which the milk to be cooled and the chilling water flow in alternate and counter-currently.
What is milk chiller?
Milk Chiller is a self-contained milk chilling system that cools milk from 35oC to 4oC without the use of a diesel generator. Using only four hours of intermittent grid power between each milking shift, the system can chill 1000 litres of milk per day, even if there is no electricity during the milk collection. Another word for it is vat refridgeration or a refrigeration unit.
How do you clean a milk plate cooler?
Cleaning with a soft-bristled brush and a high-pressure washer, taking particular care not to loosen or dislodge the gaskets. Plate coolers are prone to plate fouling.
Why should I upgrade my milk vat cooling system?
Approximately 30% of the energy costs for running a dairy come from cooling milk, a staggering amount. However, by utilizing heat recovery options from your cooling system, you can reduce both your energy demand and overall operating costs. Talk to Element Air about how you can reform your system.
